Ever since I was young, my dreams have been wild and oftentimes metaphor-ridden enough to practically beg for some sort of interpretation.
One of the most vivid and recognizable examples that appear is dreams with alligators.
When I first began having these dreams, they really scared me, but as I grew in the world and learned about dream interpretation, I realized they were nothing to be afraid of.
I have found that alligators are not just the antagonists in these dreams, but they also represent a wealth of Biblical material.
Biblical Meanings Of Alligator In Dreams:
They are about deception
Looking through the Bible, it is easy to understand how alligators have come to be synonymous with deceit.
It all started in the Garden of Eden when Satan, in the form of a serpent, beguiled Eve to have a bite at the forbidden fruit that brought along the fall of humanity (Genesis 3:1-5).
This story is very important as it sets a precedent for how lies can take us off the course God has set. In the same light, alligators in dreams can signify deceit waiting in the shadows of our waking lives.
The Book of Job also brings to mind the Leviathan as another biblical reference. It is a mighty creature of the sea, spoken about with wonder and fear as chaos and ruin itself (Job 41:1-10).
The Leviathan was not an alligator as such, but many of the traits we associate these days with one (like its bite force, power, and ability to blend in etc) are embodied by the Leviathan.
An alligator in our dream is typically a warning of dangerous people and tricky situations.
In my experience, these dreams are very imperative messages from my soul or maybe they are divine messages asking me to check the world that surrounds me with more attention.
So usually, when those types of dreams happen, I wake up and start to question everyone in my life and everything I’ve gotten myself into, and just look for the lies.
These dreams need not be examined on a superficial level, but all aspects should be taken into consideration.
Psalm 91:13 reads:
“You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.”
The verse compels us to literally face our fears and lies head-on with nothing less than the protection of God himself.
It also relieves me to know that God provides us with the ability to discern and avoid deceit. And remember the scripture from James 1:5, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
Requesting wisdom through prayer is the tool that can guide the light to see the true nature of people or circumstances.
They are about spiritual warfare
I think of Ephesians 6:12 when I write about these dreams.
Scripture says:
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers…”
Because this verse states that our warfare is outwardly spiritual and not primarily physical, psychological or in any other way.
When I have alligator dreams, in my mind I see how they are my symbolic depiction of these spiritual enemies — devilish spirits that would want any kind of destruction at any cost.
Those kinds of dreams make me step back and reevaluate my spiritual defenses.
It is a bright red flag that reminds me to stay watchful and seek God for my safety.
Since then, I have also learned the significance of prayer and spiritual warfare when it comes to dreams about alligators. The message behind these dreams is wake-up calls.
They remind me to put on the complete armor of God detailed by Paul in Ephesians 6:13-17, “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day…”
They are about power
These dreams usually happened whilst I was going through a difficult time.
They are a reminder that, just like the alligator with whom I sit, so do I have the power within me.
That fits with Isaiah 41:10, which goes:
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
This verse shows that God is always there to help strengthen us.
Ephesians 6:10-11 also reinforces the idea of divine strength: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God…”
This passage instructs us to rely on God’s strength and fight back against anything Satan tries to throw at us.
They are about repressed emotions
Alligators live in the murky waters, which represent the subconscious mind, where these buried emotions reside. For me, this is where I resonate deeply with Psalm 139:23-24:
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
This passage calls for recognizing all aspects of ourselves, even the ugly ones.
By experience, I have learned that to see the light of repressed emotion usually requires prayer. Journaling is also a lifeline for me, a way to process my feelings.
On top of that, I meditate to establish solitude with God for guidance and growth.
Jeremiah 17:10 provides comfort in the search; it states, “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”
I have found great value and a means of connection in sharing these dreams with my spiritual mentor. He helps me to consider elements that I have overlooked.
The Bible tells us to share our burdens: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2).
They are about negative influences
When I dream of alligators, I interpret them as warnings against toxic influences.
