“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
This verse speaks to the need for listening to spiritual messages and about our ears not being just physical organs but divine communication devices.
When I hear the sound in my right ear, that buzzing now has more meaning than just being a random sound- for me, it means something spiritual – to be open and hear what God or the Holy Spirit is saying.
In fact, a number of biblical verses seemingly confirm this. Isaiah 30:21 reads:
“Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.“
This Bible verse actually says that divine guidance is very subtle, and we need to be listening.
The conversion of the Apostle Paul is another case that shows how auditory experiences can indicate divine communication.
In Acts 9:4-7 we read that Paul (at this time Saul) heard a voice saying, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
It has not only marked an auditory experience of Paul, but it shall prove to be a moment that forever will define the radical affect he would have on Christianity.
This principality perhaps seems more mundane than that but it is still a sign from heaven.
It is about spiritual awakening
The right ear is the side of receiving good spiritual messages.
This matches up with my experience as well – the ringing always seemed to happen at moments of extreme clarity.
A veil had been removed, and I could access a level of spiritual clarity that my Christian upbringing never seemed to be able to access.
This added awareness of connection enabled me to detect the numerous signs around me offering assistance on my spiritual journey.
My interpretation was already confirmed in the scriptures.
Isaiah 50:4 states:
“The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.”
This verse made me feel the ringing in my ear was a call to action from God telling me to really wake up to life.
After I started embracing this view of spirituality, I realized a great change in my spiritual life.
My prayers grew more intentional, and my meditation went deeper.
My spirit began to feel even more sensitive, and I became way more receptive to feeling and understanding spiritual insights.
It is about protection
Psalm 91:11 says:
“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”
This verse has resonats so deeply with me for as long as I can remember.
When I get a ringing in my right ear – and it happens to me a lot – it sort of feels like an embodied version of this vow. Like the angels are in my ear, saying they watch over me.
Other Bible references support the protective attribute of the right ear ringing.
One example is seen in 2 Kings 6:16-17, when the prophet Elisha tells his servant, “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
Praying that the servant’s eyes be opened, he then reveals a hillside covered in horses and chariots of fire, which symbolize divine protection.
This tale elegantly describes the invisible helpers who serve us, much like an invisible but sensed guardian as indicated by the inexplicable right ear ring.
It is about a divine call to obedience
Job 13:17 says:
“Listen carefully to what I say; let my words ring in your ears.”
This verse makes it clear that there is a difference between just hearing what God says and acting on what you heard.
I have experienced occasions in my life when the ringing in my ear has coincided with times when I was out of alignment with God.
During these moments, the sound feels like a message from God to bring me back to my practice.
Many instances in the Bible revolve around the importance of obedience.
James 1:22-25 makes a clear directive to doers of the word — “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
It is about receiving a blessing
In the Bible, there are several examples where the right side is a symbol of blessing.
The most significant of these is arguably the picture of Jesus at the right hand of God, described for example in Mark 16:19:
“After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.”
Being at the right hand of God is symbolic of divine favor.
In the same vein, ringing in the right ear is a sign that you are ready to receive God’s blessings.
Matthew 25:33-34 says: “He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.'”
This passage reinforces the right side in a good and blessed place (and justly so since the right ear ringing is viewed as representing that divine favor arrives).
